Acorus gramineus, also known as Japanese sweet flag, has a wide distribution from Southeast Asia and northeastern India to China, Japan, Korea, and the Russian Far East. It typically grows in strong current areas of fast-flowing streams and waterfalls. This plant is medicinally important in its native region and has been used as an ornamental plant for centuries. Acorus gramineus can be grown in moderately moist substrates and comes in several cultivars with varying colors and sizes. Some cultivars, such as 'Pusillus', are suitable for aquariums if the rhizome is attached to objects rather than buried in the substrate. The plant attaches itself using its roots. Acorus gramineus 'Variegatus' can be used as an emergent plant in open tanks or paludariums.
