Alternanthera aquatica is a species found in riversides, lakeshores, and swampy areas of Brazil, Paraguay, and Bolivia. It has a bulky growth habit and anchors its roots in nutrient-rich muddy substrates. Its shoots can grow several meters long and rise above the waterline, providing shelter for other floating plants.
