Alternanthera reineckii is a species of aquatic plant that can grow entirely submersed and has around 170 known species within its genus. It originates from South America, where it is found along riversides with periodic flooding during rainy seasons. The variety "Rosa" is the most widespread in trade, considered easy to cultivate, but requires medium to high light intensities (0.4-1 watt per liter) and CO2 fertilization for optimal growth. It can thrive in soft to hard water with a pH that does not play a significant role, but prefers slightly acidic conditions. The plant requires a nutrient-rich environment with high levels of nitrate (10mg/l and over) and phosphate (0.5 mg/l and over). For better health and growth, fertilization via substrate is recommended for lower nutrient water. Propagation can be done by cuttings, trimming off the shoot tip and replanting into the substrate, allowing lateral shoots to grow and create a bushy appearance.
