Ammannia gracilis originates from swampy areas in West Africa. It was first introduced to the aquarium hobby by P.J. Bussink who discovered it in Liberia. This plant is popular due to its beauty and moderate growth requirements. A. gracilis requires strong lighting and sufficient CO2 (25-30 mg/l) to thrive. It prefers soft, slightly acidic water but can adapt to more extreme conditions. Adding nitrate, phosphate, iron, and micronutrients to the tank is recommended. Iron deficiency causes fading leaf color, while excessive provision leads to longer stems and less intense red coloration. A. gracilis exhibits its most vibrant coloration when nitrates are low and phosphate and micronutrient levels are high. Under optimal conditions, this large, colorful plant can grow to the water surface. It can be propagated by cutting the upper part or lateral shoots and replanting them. A. gracilis is suitable for medium-sized aquaria (76 liters or more) with a background placement, where its cognac-colored hues contrast nicely with bright green plants like Heteranthera zosterifolia.
