Anubias afzelii, often mislabeled as "Anubias congensis", is actually a synonym of Anubias heterophylla. True A. afzelii has reddish-brown leaf stalks and narrow leaves that can grow up to 40 cm in length with a lanceolate to oval shape. The plant's land form can reach heights of one meter, but cultivated plants tend to be smaller. It is native to West Africa, where it grows on sunny to shaded riverbanks and forms dense groups. A. afzelii can thrive as a submerged aquarium plant, although it grows slowly. Its robustness makes it suitable for cichlid tanks.
