Description
Anubias barteri var. nana originates from Cameroon, where it is found in shallow forest river zones with strong currents. This dwarf variety was first cultivated by Tropica in 1970 and introduced into the hobby. It is one of the most widely spread aquarium plants in Europe, Asia, and the US. This plant has a creeping rhizome that produces leaves which can last several years. It grows under various light conditions, including low (0.25 watt per liter) and high (1 watt per liter) intensities, with or without CO2 supplementation. For optimal growth, it is recommended to fertilize the plant via substrate or CO2, remove old leaves, and maintain a balanced nutrient supply. High phosphate levels may induce flowering, while good iron and micronutrient levels can reduce spot algae issues under strong light. To control algae growth, place the plant in a shadier area of the aquarium. Propagation involves cutting the rhizome into two or more pieces. This species is suitable for nano tanks and small aquaria, where it can add depth to the middleground. In larger aquaria, it can be placed in the foreground. When planting, avoid covering the rhizome with gravel to prevent rotting. Anubias barteri var. nana can also grow on driftwood or rocks, which can be attached using a nylon thread.
