Bacopa salzmannii is native to Mexico and Paraguay, where it grows semi-emerged on pond edges and slow-moving riverbanks. This species is variable and encompasses several groups previously described as separate species. The plant marketed as Bacopa sp. 'Araguaia' is actually a form of B. salzmannii, formerly classified as Bacopa lilacina. In the USA, this species is well-known but less available in trade than through private hobbyists. In Europe, it is new and only a few specimens are cultivated. This species resembles B. caroliniana and can be grown under similar conditions. It is smaller and has a reddish tint on the leaf midrib, which may fade under high light or low micronutrient levels. The emersed form has a thick, hairy brown stem and longer flower stalks than B. caroliniana. CO2 injection is optional for aquarium cultivation. Propagation is easy via lateral shoots, which can occur spontaneously or after trimming. This plant is suitable for emersed cultivation due to its attractive purple flowers.
