Description

Barbula sp. is a cushion-forming moss originating from Asia, introduced to Europe by Armin Piątkowski (Poland). Professor Benito C. Tan (Singapore) identified it as a Barbula species in 2007. The genus Barbula comprises around 200 species found on soil or rocks worldwide, including Barbula convoluta which grows in cracks of old city pavement and walls in Europe. Barbula sp. has shoots over 2.5 cm long with ramified lower parts, forming a cushion-like growth habit. Leaves are densely arranged around the stem, obovate to lanceolate, with distinct midribs reaching the acute leaf tip. Leaf cells are parallel to the midrib, rectangular to hexagonal in shape.
