Barclaya longifolia, a member of the Nymphaceae family, originates from Southeast Asia. Despite being a water lily, this plant does not produce floating leaves. Its elongated, wavy leaves are reddish-green and resemble Cryptocoryne at first glance, but grow larger like Echinodorus as it matures. Two varieties exist: red and green, with the latter having a reddish underside. The green variety grows slightly larger than the red one. This plant can be kept small by restricting its roots or using a small pot. It is relatively undemanding, requiring sufficient light and warm water (above 24°C), but benefits from substrate fertilization. Roots-bound plants tend to grow even larger. Note that it is prone to snail damage, as the leaves are tender and easily damaged. The plant may withdraw periodically, causing all leaves to die back before new ones sprout. Propagation can occur through seed or tubers, with seed production being relatively easy. Healthy plants produce flower stalks, which resemble poppy flowers, and release seeds when mature. Remove the pod to avoid scattering seeds throughout the aquarium. Wash the seeds in a jellylike substance and sow them in sandy substrate with direct light. For fish tanks, choose sedate species that don't dig. Alternatively, plant seeds on a dish outside or in the foreground of a planted aquarium. Young plants can be replanted at 6-10 cm height. This plant requires plenty of space to thrive, making tanks above 250 liters suitable. It is challenging to find companion plants for B. longifolia, but it can be used as a solitary beauty in the background or side of an aquarium, particularly in discus tanks where it prefers warmth.
