Description

Blyxa japonica grows exclusively submerged in shallow ponds, swamps, and slow-flowing rivers rich in iron in subtropical and tropical regions of East and South-East Asia, as well as in rice paddies. It has a grasslike, bushy habit and can be cultivated with sufficient light (0.5-1 watt per litre), CO2 supply, and fertilization with nitrate, phosphate, potassium, and micronutrients. Under optimal conditions, it displays golden and reddish hues and a compact growth habit. Insufficient light causes it to grow taller and greener with a lanky habit. The plant develops a large root system and prefers nutrient-rich substrate or bottom fertilizers. When phosphate levels are high (1-2 mg per litre), it produces long stems with tiny white flowers. Blyxa japonica is a stem plant with short stems and dense leaves, not forming long runners like other grasslike plants. It grows lateral shoots at the base that can be cut and replanted.
