Description

Ceratopteris thalictroides is a fern that grows in tropical regions, including shallow waters and muddy ground. In Asia, its emersed leaves are used as a vegetable. The plant can be cultivated for multiple years without issues. There are many local forms of this species, and aquarists often cultivate varieties with coarsely or finely pinnate submerged leaves. This fern has been in the hobby for some time under various names, including water sprite and Indian fern. Botanists disagree about whether Ceratopteris cornuta is a separate species or a synonym of C. thalictroides. In aquaristics, plants with coarser leaflets are generally called C. cornuta, while those with finer leaflets are known as C. thalictroides. The plant grows rapidly and can be cultivated free-floating on the water surface or planted into the ground. It forms large, fine-leaved bushes quickly and prefers medium light intensities and CO2 concentrations of under 20 mg/l.
