Description

Cryptocoryne affinis Hook. f. is native to the Malayan Peninsula (western Malaysia) and forms dense populations on sand- and gravelbanks in rapidly flowing rivers and rivulets, including limestone areas. The plant was widely popular in aquarium hobby in earlier times but has since become relatively rare due to its difficulty in propagation compared to similar-looking species. True C. affinis is often available from other hobbyists rather than through trade. The plant exhibits significant variability in height, leaf color, and texture, which can change depending on the conditions it is kept in. Its final size ranges from 10-40 cm under different lighting conditions. The leaves of emersed plants typically lie flat on the ground. C. affinis is best identified by its distinctive inflorescence, characterized by a dark purple blade with narrow spirals. This species thrives in low-tech tanks with low light and hard water, forming subterranean runners that aid in population growth. However, it can be susceptible to "crypt melt" if conditions change too quickly.
