Description

The Cryptocoryne spp., also known as C. wendtii, is a widely spread plant from Sri Lanka. It is readily available and has been used in aquaristics for over 60 years. This easy-to-cultivate plant adapts well to soft or hard water and grows better under more intensive light. The brown-green rosettes that form quickly after planting spread rapidly and create dense bushes. Nutrient-rich substrates enhance growth, and the plant responds well to ample fertilization and CO2 supplementation. However, it can still grow satisfactorily without these components. This species can be cultivated emersed in moist, nutrient-rich substrates, where it may flower if daily sprayed with water. Propagation is not difficult, as it produces runners on its rhizome that can be cut off and replanted. This plant is suitable for the middle ground of an aquarium and can be kept in shape by trimming regularly. Its reddish-brown pointed leaves provide a striking contrast to other plants.
