Cryptocoryne pontederiifolia is a freshwater aquarium plant native to the northernmost part of Sumatra's west coast (Indonesia), where it grows in tidal areas with nipa palm (Nypa fruticans). It has been introduced to Singapore, growing on swampy ground along forestal rivers. This species is commonly traded in Europe and is similar to Cryptocoryne moehlmannii, but can be distinguished by the sulphurous yellow or reddish colour of its spathe blade and brownish to light purple leaves with a lighter underside. In cultivation, it is adaptable to different water parameters, from soft to hard, and can thrive in conditions ranging from slightly acidic to neutral. It responds well to CO2 fertilization and intensive lighting, which promotes compact growth and a bushier appearance. The plant takes several weeks to adapt to new conditions and regenerate before growing again. Propagation occurs through runners starting from the mother plant, forming a group over time. Its wide leaves with slight nubby patterns make it suitable for medium-sized and large aquaria as a mid-ground or background plant, replacing Anubias.
