Description

Cryptocoryne undulata is an easy-to-grow aquarium plant that originates from Sri Lanka, where it can be found growing emersed and submersed in rivers and rivulets. It thrives in a variety of conditions, including unfertilized water and low light, but growth is slow under these conditions. With nutrient-rich substrate and sufficient light, the plant's growth rate increases, although its overall height remains compact. The mother plant produces many runners under these conditions, allowing the plant mass to grow substantially over time. CO2 fertilization is not necessary for this species. For optimal cultivation, small portions of the plant should be spaced a few centimeters apart to allow for growth. Emersed cultivation in moist substrates with daily watering is also effective. Propagation is simple: cut off runners near the mother plant and replant them elsewhere. After taking root, young plants develop quickly into mature specimens. The plant's brown, undulated leaves with occasional marbling make it a striking addition to an aquarium's midsection, especially when contrasted with bright green or red plants like Helanthium tenellum or Ranalisma rostratum.
