Description

Echinodorus macrophyllus has an ambiguous name in both aquatic and scientific contexts, as multiple plants are referred to by this name. The true E. macrophyllus is only found in southern Brazil's coastal areas. Plants sold under this name may belong to a different species, possibly E. cordifolius. This plant, also known as E. "radicans", is characterized by its large size and wide leaves that can grow emersed even in large aquaria. Under short-day conditions (13 hours of uninterrupted dark), it may remain submerged for a longer period. However, this Echinodorus is primarily suited for open tanks or large paludaria as an emersed decorative plant. Its heart-shaped leaves on long stalks reach above the waterline, requiring regular watering to prevent wilting in indoor air. Under good conditions, the plant produces ramified flower stalks with white flowers and numerous adventitious plants for propagation.
