Description

Eichhornia azurea, also known as anchored water hyacinth, is a popular aquatic plant due to its striking submerged form. Native to the American tropics and subtropics, it forms dense floating mats of long shoots with emersed spoon-shaped leaves and white, purple, or blue flowers. The submerged form is rare in nature, but when exposed to air, stems develop aerial leaves with spongiform tissue that provides buoyancy. To propagate, cut off the head of a stem, allowing 2-4 lateral shoots to grow before using them as new cuttings. This plant thrives in tanks at least 50 cm tall, as it tends to grow towards the surface and requires regular pruning to maintain its submerged form.
