Description

Commelinaceae sp. "Green" is a plant that may belong to the genus Floscopa, possibly imported from Asia. It has upright to creeping stems when cultivated as a terrestrial plant, but becomes rigid and upright when grown submersed. The leaves are wide lanceolate, up to 8 cm long and 2.2 cm wide, without a stalk, and form a leaf sheath around the stem. The stems are strong and grow up to 4.5 mm wide. Submerged leaves have a bright green color, slightly undulate margin, and their tip bows slightly downward. Emersed and submersed sprouts differ only in color, with emersed ones being darker. Strong light, softer water, acidic to neutral pH, good CO2 supply, and nutrient-rich substrate are required for submersed cultivation. This plant is a relatively slow grower that can be propagated by trimming stems and planting cuttings in the substrate. Emersed cultivation is easier and it can be kept as a houseplant in bright conditions. The plant blooms under short-day conditions, producing compact inflorescences with small white to pale purple flowers. Its unique growth habit makes it suitable for free-standing groups or contrasting against dark backdrops.
