Hottonia palustris, an aquatic plant native to Europe, has pinnate, alternate leaves. It's endangered or already extinct in several regions and legally protected in Germany. In its natural habitat, it grows in shaded, muddy-peaty ditches or on oxbow lake edges, forming dense submersed populations with only flower stalks visible above waterline in May-June. If the location dries out, the plant forms low-growing, matlike emersed populations. It's a medicinal plant and can be cultivated for ponds or aquariums, often called Hottonia inflata but actually referring to H. palustris, a perennial. Featherfoil resembles Limnophila and Myriophyllum species but has densely alternate leaves like Proserpinaca palustris. It's relatively easy to cultivate as an aquarium plant, requiring strong lighting (0.5 watts/l), constant nitrate and phosphate supply, and CO2 injection for healthy growth. It thrives in coldwater tanks with temperatures below 26°C, and cooler water promotes wider shoots and good health.
