Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides, or lawn pennywort, is a low-growing creeping plant native to tropical Asia and Africa. It can thrive in both water and dry land, making it highly adaptable. In the aquarium, this plant requires high light intensity, CO2 injection (20-30 mg/l), and regular nutrient supply (nitrate, phosphate, iron, and micronutrients) to grow healthily. A high phosphate level helps prevent green spot algae formation on leaves. Without sufficient light and CO2, the plant will decay and die. Propagation is easy by cutting off lateral shoots and replanting them. This plant can also be grown emersed above waterline, producing small flowers and infrutescences. It grows well in terrestrial environments with moderately moist soil, making it suitable for terraria and paludaria, or as a potted plant on brightly lit windowsills. In the aquarium, Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides is a good foreground and mid-ground plant due to its unique light greyish green color and dense growth habit. Regular trimming is necessary to maintain its shape. When planting, simply place shoots in the desired area and weigh them down with pebbles for establishment.
