Description

Hygrophila sp. 'Bold' is a strikingly colored aquarium plant that originated in the USA in 2006. Its native region and species classification are unknown, possibly originating from Thailand. The plant exhibits remarkable plasticity, with variable characteristics influenced by its environment. It can be mistaken for Hygrophila sp. 'Tiger', but differs in leaf shape, margin, and tip. Under optimal conditions with intense light and micronutrient fertilization, the plant assumes a reddish-brown to purple color and forms shorter internodes. In standard aquarium conditions, the leaves are brown with a more pronounced gridlike pattern and longer internodes. The plant adapts well without CO2 injection or strong lighting, making it an alternative to Hygrophila polysperma. Emersed cultivation is straightforward, and the plant's plasticity is evident in its land form as well. Young emersed specimens have glandular hairs and a reddish-brown color, while older plants are less hirsute and green. The flowers grow densely together with bracts on a spike, and the emersed sprout can reach up to 20 cm in width.
