Description

Limnophila sp. 'Gigantea' originates from South-East Asia, where it grows in slow-flowing or stagnant waters along banks and edges. It can be distinguished from L. aquatica by the light green shoot tip of its leaves without a red tint. This plant is established in the hobby in the USA, but its cultivation status in Europe is unclear. Limnophila sp. 'Gigantea' requires sufficient light (0.5 watts per litre) and CO2 fertilization for optimal growth. It needs clear and clean water to prevent particle accumulation between leaves, promoting algal growth. Regular additions of macronutrients are necessary, with high phosphate levels (around 2 mg/l) causing internodes to shorten. The plant requires an ample iron supply to maintain its color intensity. Under favorable conditions, it is a fast-growing species that needs ample space and can be propagated by cutting off the top shoot or re-planting lateral shoots. This stem plant is suitable for medium-sized to large aquaria, particularly in Dutch-style tank layouts due to its unique leaf structure and color.
