Lobelia cardinalis, also known as the cardinal flower, is native to eastern and central regions of the United States, typically found in moist environments near rivers, ponds, and road ditches. Its emersed form features green leaves with purple undersides and attractive scarlet bell-shaped flowers. The submersed plant has light green coloration. This plant has been used in Dutch-style aquaria for a long time and is widely available in trade. Lobelia cardinalis is easy to care for, requiring moderate lighting or higher for compact growth. CO2 injection is not necessary but can promote healthy growth. Regular doses of liquid fertilizer help determine the plant's size. Optimal water conditions include 10-20 mg/l nitrate levels, 1-2 mg/l phosphate levels, and sufficient micronutrients and iron for fast growth. This stem plant grows moderately towards the water surface and develops white roots on its nodes. Trimming involves cutting off shoot tips, which can be replanted to create a "plant street" by gradually decreasing trimming intervals. Its slow growth rate and controllable height make Lobelia cardinalis suitable for Dutch-style Leiden tanks or formal layouts.
