Ludwigia inclinata var. verticillata 'Cuba' is a large stem plant that grows emersed and submersed in swampy areas on the Isle of Youth, Cuba. When cultivated above water, its leaves are ovate and green, while submerged growth produces long, thin leaves with marbled patterns of red and orange hues. This variety belongs to Ludwigia inclinata, which forms large yellow flowers despite varying geographic locations and habits. It requires sufficient light (0.5-1 watt/litre), additional CO2, balanced nutrients, and room to grow. With proper conditions, it is a fast-growing plant. Good lighting is essential for color development and healthy growth, with ideal nitrate levels of 5-15 mg/l and phosphate content of 1-2 mg/l. Iron and micronutrients are also necessary, and white new shoots indicate iron deficiency. The plant grows at an angle over the substrate, has a highly ramified habit, and can become invasive if not provided with sufficient space. It does not tolerate frequent trimming well, and cut-off shoots may die off if not replanted. This attractive stem plant is suitable for middle- or background placement in larger tanks, providing colorful accents.
