Description

Ludwigia senegalensis is a relatively new addition to the hobby, characterized by its distinctive leaf pattern and brick-red color. Native to Africa, it can be found from Senegal to Angola and northern Zambia, growing in various wet locations up to 1100m above sea level. When cultivated emersed, it develops a creeping growth habit, while submersed shoots grow upright. This plant requires optimal conditions for growth, including high light levels, as placement in shaded or poorly lit areas can impede growth. Micronutrient supply is also crucial, as deficiencies can cause shoot tips to blacken and die off. Fertilize with double the recommended dosage and maintain macronutrient levels at 20mg/l nitrate and 2-3mg/l phosphate. Group planting should be done loosely, as dense planting can lead to smaller plants with reduced lower leaves. Under intense light and good current, stems can be grouped closer together. Soft water appears to promote growth. While its growth rate is moderate, the plant produces numerous lateral shoots, making propagation easy through cutting off top or lateral shoots and replanting in substrate. As a stem plant, Ludwigia senegalensis adds visual interest to aquarium layouts, contrasting beautifully with green plants.
