Description
The "needle leaf" vernacular name refers to at least two similar forms of Java ferns with distinct growth sizes. Both varieties feature narrow, band-like leaves with a medium to dark green color and undulate margins. The midrib is relatively thick compared to leaf width, and the underside of each leaf has dark brown hirsute scales. Leaves on the rhizome are spaced closely together, and roots remain relatively short. The larger variety, also known as M. pteropus "Taiwan" or incorrectly as "Narrow Leaf", has leaves typically over 5 mm wide, reaching a maximum width of 2 cm and length of 30 cm. In contrast, the smaller variety, known as Microsorum spec. "Mini", has leaves measuring 3-5 mm in width and is an overall slower grower.
