Description

Murdannia engelsii is a stem plant that belongs to the Commelinaceae family. Its natural origin is still unclear, but it is known to occur on sandy riverbanks in the Amazonian, Cerrado, and Pantanal regions of Brazil. Underwater, this plant develops undulate leaves with a thin membrane and brownish-red to pink coloration. The lateral veins have a slightly darker color, giving the leaf a marbled appearance. The alternate leaves grow in two lines and are lineal in shape, reaching up to 9 cm in length and 1.2 cm in width. The stem forms a sheath of around 5 mm at the base, and grows to a diameter of 2.5 mm with a light green to reddish color. Its growth habit is often overhanging with moderate ramification.
