The Ophiopogon genus consists of approximately 65 species, mostly evergreen and grass-like, with relationships to lily of the valley, asparagus, and Dracaena. Most species are native to East, South-East, and South Asia. One notable species is Ophiopogon japonicus, commonly known as mondo grass. It has been cultivated for its medicinal and ornamental value in China, Korea, and Japan. The plant has dark green, wiry leaves that grow 10-50 cm long and 2-4 mm wide. There is also a dwarf cultivar called 'Kyoto Dwarf'. Mondo grass can be grown as a terrarium plant or outdoors in moist soil. It is hardy in Central Europe but requires fresh humus-rich soils and moderate watering. During the warm season, it produces short flower stalks with small whiteish-blue flowers, followed by dark blue berries. New plants develop from rhizomes, which can be cut off and replanted.
