Persicaria (or Polygonum) sp. 'Kawagoeanum', also known as Polygonum sp. 'Pink', is an aquarium plant that can be cultivated emersed or submersed. It is believed to belong to the species Persicaria kawagoeana from East Asia, but this has not been confirmed. The plant grows in wet locations and can thrive above or below water. It is a relatively rare find in pet stores or online shops, but can be obtained from other hobbyists. The cultivation of P. sp. 'Kawagoeanum' requires strong light from metal halide lamps, compact or T5 lamps to develop its pink-orange color. High levels of CO2, phosphate, and iron also contribute to this intense color. This plant does not have growth problems and can grow well under artificial light or sunlight. The leaves may develop a V-shaped brown spot on their upper side in optimal lighting conditions. P. sp. 'Kawagoeanum' has a ramifying growth habit, forming a dense bush that is suitable for Japanese-style Nature Aquarium layouts. It should be hidden with driftwood or middleground plants to hide its lowermost leaves. The plant's optics complement Cyperus helferi and can be used as a background plant in medium to large aquaria.
