Persicaria (Polygonum) sp. 'Sao Paulo' is a new aquarium plant from Brazil, whose correct species name is still unknown. When grown in optimal conditions, it displays intense colors, making it an attractive addition to aquaria. This plant is available from Rayon Vert and some hobbyists in the USA. To differentiate it from similar plants, note the following characteristics: * Leaves are mostly red along the entire stem under strong light * Youngest leaves curve downward * Leaf form is lanceolate * Plant grows upright with minimal lateral branching This plant requires high-light conditions with CO2 injection and strong lighting. It thrives in aquariums designed for Tonina fluviatilis, Eriocaulon, or Syngonanthus species. For optimal growth and coloration, direct light from metal halide, compact, or T5 lamps is recommended, along with ample iron fertilization and a phosphate concentration of 1 mg/l or above. This plant can be used in aquascapes but requires careful placement to avoid overcrowding. A few stems are sufficient, and it grows well emersed in paludariums or similar environments, displaying an intense wine red to purple color. Land forms may develop flower stems that add interest to the layout.
