Poaceae sp. "Purple Bamboo" is an aquarium plant that was mistakenly identified as Polygonum or Persicaria upon its introduction. However, it belongs to the true grass family (Poaceae) and is one of few species from this family cultivated in aquaria. The plant's parallel leaf venation confirms its affiliation with Poaceae. Cultivated in Asia and the USA, it remains unknown in Europe. The name "Purple Bamboo" refers to its resemblance to bamboo, which also belongs to the Poaceae family. However, unlike most bamboo species, this grass does not lignify or grow large. Its exact species and genus are still unknown due to unverified origins and lack of flowering. This plant is easy to care for and can thrive in "low-tech" or "no-tech" tanks with sufficient light, CO2 injection, and nutrients. It forms impressive purple and silvery hues under optimal conditions and produces large oxygen bubbles on its surface. Its upright growth habit and delicate appearance make it suitable for minimalistic aquascaping inspired by Asian styles. It can be used in groups of uneven numbers and requires occasional trimming to maintain a stiff look. Additionally, this plant is well-suited for paludaria and can be grown emersed above the waterline, making it an effective choice for creating a natural-looking environment around driftwood or as a background element in open tanks. Regular pruning is necessary when growing this plant emersed, as its stems can reach over a meter if left untrimmed.
