Description
Pogostemon stellatus, also known as Eusteralis stellata, is native to swamps in East and Southeast Asia and northern Australia. It has many varieties found naturally due to its vast distribution area. This plant is known for its breathtaking beauty, making it a popular choice for aquariums. However, it requires high light and fertilization standards to thrive. Insufficient light can lead to leaf loss on the lower stem, while a constant CO2 supply is necessary for optimal growth. Fertilizing with nitrate, phosphate, and micronutrients in stable concentrations is crucial for long-term success. The plant may develop a crippled habit if growing conditions change too quickly or high levels of nitrate and phosphate cause it to turn green, while lower levels induce purple to orange colors. Pogostemon stellatus is an iron indicator plant, indicating deficiency through yellowing or whitening leaves. The densely-growing whorls can reach 6-14 cm in width and produce lateral shoots that can be cut off and replanted for propagation. The plant can develop into a decorative highlight in the center of a tank when its requirements are met.
