Description

Potamogeton gayi is a widely distributed species found in stagnant and flowing waterbodies outside of tropical regions, specifically in southern South America (Southern Brazil and Argentine). This plant has long been popular in aquarium hobby for its robust growth rate. The thin rhizomes of P. gayi spread out in the substrate, producing vertical stems that can grow up to 1 meter in length. The linear leaves grow in two rows on the stem, without stalks, measuring 4-12 cm in length and 2-5 mm in width. Leaves are soft, translucent, and change color from green to orange-brown depending on light conditions. The midrib is visible, accompanied by a thin longitudinal nerve between the midrib and leaf margin.
