Description

Proserpinaca palustris (mermaid weed) is found in eastern and southeastern USA, Caribbean islands, Central America, and parts of South America. This plant has developed various varieties depending on the region. It has been cultivated for decades in USA and Europe, with the Cuban variety differing from its North American conspecifics. To grow this plant, it requires medium to strong light (0.5 watts per litre or more) and CO2 addition. A low NO3 level (5-10 mg/l) and high PO4 level (1.5-2 mg/l) promotes robust growth and deep orange-red coloration. Higher nitrate levels may induce lighter hues. Regular iron supply is necessary to maintain vibrant colors. This plant grows slowly, forming few lateral shoots. Cutting back can be done by replanting the upper shoot or leaving the old part for new shoots to form.
