Rotala mexicana is a stem plant native to tropical and subtropical regions of South America, Western Africa, Australia, and Japan. Its variable nature is expected due to its wide distribution. The plant has several synonyms, including Rotala pulsilla, which is also known in the hobby under this name. The first variety introduced into trade originated from South America and was listed as Rotala sp. 'Araguaia'. Varieties from other regions are rare and hard to obtain. R. mexicana 'Araguaia' requires strong light, CO2, macro- and micronutrients, and adequate nitrate levels for optimal growth. Failure to meet these requirements can lead to blackening, stunted growth, or intense red coloration of stems. The plant grows rapidly when kept in good conditions, branching readily, making propagation by cuttings easy. As a background or mid-ground planting, R. mexicana's reddish stems and yellowish-green leaves create a beautiful display. It is recommended for hobbyists who can meet its growth requirements.
