Rotala sp. 'Colorata' is believed to be a variant of Rotala rotundifolia, a species known for its variable appearance. Several forms of R. rotundifolia in trade can develop a reddish color when cultivated underwater. R. rotundifolia 'Colorata' turns reddish under moderate light and develops a more intense red coloration under strong light.
