Description

Rotala sp. 'Vietnam' was introduced to the hobby by Rayon Vert, a Japanese company. Native to shallow waters and wet ground, its submersed form resembles Rotala hippuris, but its species identification remains unclear. It requires moderate light for an overall green appearance with red stems, while intense light yields a golden color. CO2 injection is necessary for optimal growth. The recommended water parameters include phosphate levels of 1-2 mg/l to promote thicker stems and reddish tint, as well as ample iron and micronutrients. Iron deficiencies result in weakly colored stems, and extreme lack can cause die-off. Rotala sp. 'Vietnam' grows vertically with many lateral shoots, especially when allowed to grow along the water surface. Propagate by cutting top or lateral shoots and replanting them in the substrate. This plant is suitable for middle- and background layouts, particularly those dominated by stem plants, where it contrasts beautifully against red and green plants.
