Description

Rotala wallichii is a stem plant native to soft, slightly acidic waters in South-Eastern Asia. It requires high light intensity (at least 0.5 watts per liter) and a well-balanced supply of nutrients, including CO2 fertilization, to thrive. Optimal growth conditions include moderate nitrate levels (10-15 mg/l), high phosphate content (1-2 mg/l), and adequate iron and micronutrients. Under suitable conditions, the plant develops stunning colors ranging from pink to deep red on leaves up to 2 cm in diameter. Rotala wallichii forms dense, finely-structured groups that can be propagated through cuttings of top and lateral shoots, which quickly develop new roots when replanted. This species is often used as a red accent plant in Nature Aquaria, Dutch-style tanks, or as a mid-water to background element in aquariums, with three to five stems recommended for optimal growth and density.
