Description

Salvinia oblongifolia is the largest Salvinia species, with leaves reaching up to 6 cm in length and 2.5 cm in width. It inhabits shallow stagnant waterbodies in Central and Eastern Brazil. This floating fern was cultivated in Germany around 1910-1911 but later became unavailable. In 1995, it was reintroduced by Professor Elias R. de la Sota when he gifted the plant to the Botanical Garden Berlin-Dahlem. Since then, it has been available in trade sporadically. Optimal growth conditions for this fern include nutrient-rich water and temperatures ranging from 27°C to 29°C, as well as intense light.
