Description
Saururus cernuus, or lizard's tail, is native to eastern and southeastern USA, typically found in shallow water zones of ditches, ponds, bogs, and rivulets. It grows mostly emersed, but can be submersed under certain conditions. This herbaceous bog plant is easy to cultivate with moderate requirements. For optimal growth, it needs intense light and a constant CO2 supply. Liquid fertilizers containing nitrate, phosphate, and micronutrients promote overall health and vitality, although the plant can thrive without fertilization. Leaves grow slowly, making them prone to spot algae, which can be addressed by maintaining high phosphate levels. In emersed cultivation on pond edges, ensure regular trimming as it spreads rapidly through subterranean runners. Submersed growth is straight, and the plant breaks the water surface quickly if left unchecked. In aquariums, Saururus cernuus does not develop a large root system. Propagation involves cutting lateral shoots or runners into small pieces, allowing them to float in water to form new plantlets within a short time. Alternatively, top cuttings can be replanted in the substrate for dense plant growth.
