Description

Spirodela polyrhiza, also known as greater duckweed, is found worldwide in temperate to tropical climates, and is common in Central Europe, often alongside other duckweed species. It thrives in stagnant, eutrophic water bodies with shallow, muddy conditions. This plant has larger fronds than similar genera, measuring approximately 1 cm in diameter, with a reddish underside and multiple roots (7-21). In contrast, Landoltia punctata has fewer roots, while Lemna species have only one root per frond. As a floating aquarium plant, Spirodela polyrhiza grows well in nitrate-rich water with moderate light. Its size makes it easier to control than other duckweeds.
