Description

Stratiotes aloides, a large rosulate plant with rigid leaves and sharp spiked margins, is found in Europe and Central Asia, typically thriving in nutrient-rich warm lowland waters that tend to silt up, such as oxbow lakes. The plant hibernates submerged on the waterbody's ground and rises to the surface when temperatures increase in spring. During summer, some leaves grow above the waterline while long roots anchor the plant in mud at shallow depths.
