Syngonanthus macrocaulon is an aquatic plant that originates from soft blackwater rivers near the Amazon river mouth. It was introduced to aquaristics as Tonina sp. 'Belém' by Rayon Vert, but Cavan Allen found it to belong to Syngonanthus genus. Christel Kasselmann confirmed its identity through comparison with herbarium samples. This plant requires highly intense light (1 watt per liter), CO2 addition, and soft water (GH and KH not over 5). A slightly acidic substrate and sufficient iron are also necessary for maintaining its bright green color. Syngonanthus macrocaulon grows moderately fast, focusing energy on lateral shoots rather than vertical growth. Trimming should be done by cutting the uppermost 4 cm of stem to replant in the substrate. Longer cuttings may develop roots on the lower part, while shorter ones grow better and look more beautiful. It is recommended to add mycorrhiza fungi-rich material near the plant for optimal growth. This unique plant is an eye-catching accent piece in the aquarium, especially when combined with grasslike plants like Sagittaria subulata or Eriocaulaceae family members like Tonina fluviatilis and Eriocaulon species.
