Description

Vallisneria gracilis is a relatively new addition to the aquarium hobby, originating from North Australia. It typically grows up to 15 cm in its natural habitat but can reach heights of 70-80 cm in aquariums. Initially, it was considered a synonym of Vallisneria nana, but recent research confirms V. gracilis as a distinct species. Unlike true V. nana, which has broader leaves and is more similar to V. spiralis, V. gracilis has ribbon-shaped rosulate leaves. Once established, it produces many runners, sometimes forming dense curtains that cover the tank's back. V. gracilis requires moderate light intensity, starting at 0.4 watt/l, as low light can cause its leaves to grow excessively long. Regular fertilization with liquid iron and CO2 injection promote significant growth. If its demands are met, it is an uncomplicated plant that reproduces readily.
