Rotala rotundifolia is an aquatic plant native to South Asia, where it grows in swamps and riversides up to 2700 meters above sea level. The plant was introduced to aquariums under the wrong name Rotala indica around 1960, causing confusion with the true Rotala indica. The emersed form of R. rotundifolia has distinctive candle-like flower spikes on the shoot tip, while the submersed form has elongated oval or linear leaves in aquariums. The species name "rotundifolia" refers to its round-leaved swamp form, but the aquatic form has different shaped leaves. Several colored forms of Rotala rotundifolia are available in trade and can be distinguished by their environment. This plant is relatively easy-growing and undemanding, thriving under medium light and showing full potential with strong light (0.66 W/l). It requires low nitrate levels (5 mg/l) and high phosphate and iron/micronutrient levels for best coloration. Rotala rotundifolia can be propagated by cuttings of lateral or top shoots, which can be replanted into the substrate. This plant is suitable for middle- to background placement in tanks and can be cultivated outside during warm months or even survive mild winters in a pond.
