Taxiphyllum alternans is a creeping moss originating from temperate to subtropical regions, including southeastern USA and Eastern Asia. It thrives on earth, tree roots, rotting wood, swamps, and rocks in its natural habitat. Initially known as Taiwan moss, its true origin remains unclear. Under good lighting, it branches more densely and regularly compared to Taxiphyllum barbieri. Microscopic examination reveals distinct differences: T. alternans has a sawed leaf margin only at the tip, whereas T. barbieri's margin is finely sawed throughout.
